Over the last ten years of Inside the Writers House, Rutgers students have visited almost 300 authors in cities all over the world, from Dublin to Paris to Buenos Aires to Johannesburg. But this week is all about Jersey (with one foray to Sydney), starting with the Queen of Northern Gothic herself, JOYCE CAROL OATES.

In 1996, Joyce received the PEN/Malamud Award for a lifetime of literary achievement. She has written some fifty books since then. Sixty novels, fifty short story collections, eight volumes of poetry, numerous plays, countless essays and book reviews, and plenty of long nonfiction pieces on subjects ranging from the poetry of Emily Dickinson to the boxer Mike Tyson. The New Yorker labelled Joyce an "unruly genius," and the New York Times insisted she was "on any short list of America's greatest living writers." NPR called her "a giant among us" and an "unnatural phenomenon of productivity," saying "Norman Mailer, one of the most prolific American writers of the 20th century, may have compared himself to boxing heavyweights, But Joyce Carol Oates is an entire sports complex." In addition to winning the National Book Award, two O. Henry Awards, and the National Humanities Medal, Joyce is a five time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, a multiple winner of the Bram Stoker Award, a recipient of the World Fantasy Award, and the first female author to receive the Horror Writers Associations Lifetime Achievement Award.
