Course description: Writing the Personal Essay
Since the early 2000s, memoirs have been a burgeoning market in the creative nonfiction genre, but this category of creative writing goes back at least to St. Augustine in the 400th century C.E. Whenever compelling writers feel the need to express themselves, we want to read what they have to say, because the examined life can remind us of our own struggles and questions. In this class, we will read a number of contemporary writers, including Patti Smith, Ross Gay, Mark Doty, Jeanette Winterson, Carvell Wallace, Chloe Cooper Jones, Gabriel Byrne, Arundhati Roy, and others, and write micro-essays inspired by their reflections. Later in the semester, we will practice revision by expanding some of these micro-essays into a longer, 8-10 page work.
