Beginning and Advanced AP English Literature and/or an AP English Language Course

The English Department at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, will offer a week-long intensive summer seminar for new and experienced AP English teachers, July 11 - July 14, 2017: Beginning and Advanced AP English Literature and/or an AP English Language.

The seminar will focus on basic components of both the literature and the language courses.  We will also offer five breakout sessions on comedy and satire for veteran AP teachers (Intro to Comedy & Satire, Jonathan Swift, Restoration Comedy, Contemporary Satire, and Comedy & Satire on the AP Exams).  Teachers will read a variety of genres that might be included in an AP class, discuss strategies for teaching those genres, develop critical writing assignments, and consider the role that the AP exam might play in preparing a syllabus.  The course  will enable a diverse group of educators to focus on specific pedagogical issues in the AP English classroom. The Rutgers Summer AP English Institute is endorsed by the College Board AP Program. Participants who are NJ teachers will fulfill 30 hours of Professional Development upon completion of the course. Participants have the option of taking the seminar for one graduate credit through the Rutgers Summer Session office.

The course offering is designed for both beginning and experienced instructors and will enable a diverse group of educators to focus on specific pedagogical issues in the A.P. English classroom. The Rutgers Summer A.P. English Institute has been endorsed by the College Board AP Program. Participants who are NJ teachers will fulfill 30 hours of Professional Development upon completion of their chosen seminar. Participants have the option of taking their chosen seminar for one graduate credit through the Rutgers Summer Session office.

Commuter: The cost per teacher is $1,025. This fee includes tuition, books, parking, breakfast, and lunch.
