Summer Professional Development
For more than ten years, the Department of English at Rutgers University in New Brunswick has been committed to creating learning opportunities for High School Educators in NJ. We have been home to the Dodge Poetry Foundation’s Home Words: Narratives of Place and Displacement, a two-year summer institute for teachers of AP English. We have most recently served as one of the sixteen sites for The Dodge Poetry Foundation’s Clearing the Spring, Tending the Fountain, a program through which 50 poets immerse over 200 NJ high school teachers, and up to 5,000 high school students in the practices of writing poetry.
As a continuation of Rutgers University’s partnership with NJ teachers, we continue to offer Rutgers AP English Institute, intensive seminars for teachers of AP English. Also, with the recent construction of Writers House, a space designed for developing expression through various forms of writing, more courses are being offered this year, including this summer’s Writers House Teachers College, a series of workshops designed to help high school teachers in all disciplines prepare students for college level writing.
