College Writing and Technology

June 22, 24, 26
July 20, 22, 24

The three-day seminars are designed for English and Writing teachers of college-bound students who want to know more about the literacy and technology skills their students need in order to succeed in today's college writing classroom. We will focus on the writing that students do in the first-year composition course offered by The Rutgers Writing Program called Expository Writing I, which has a national reputation for high standards and excellence. We will discuss using dialogic strategies for teaching difficult texts, writing assignments that enable strong papers, making revision central to the writing process, helping students control their patterns of error, and holding high standards for success. We will also discuss our using discussion boards and other technologies (especially in hybrid courses).

For teachers especially interested in learning more about technology in the college classroom, we will offer a third day focused exclusively on teaching internet literacy skills to students joining the "read and write" online world. The session will offer strategies for overcoming the structural limitations regarding technology that high school teachers often confront and will provide important skills and approaches that can be implemented in any high school writing classroom.
