High school students spend summers on campus as part of revamped program.

“It’s controversial as opposed to high school where everything is hush-hush,” said Ankrah, a student at Perth Amboy High School. “The attitude is more like, ‘We’re not gonna baby you.’”

Despite its emphasis on multimedia, image, video, and sound, Writers House was purposely named.

"We really wanted to emphasize that Writers House is about a level of sophistication, complexity, and commitment to both clear and elegant expression regardless of the media you are working in," said Richard Miller, chair of the Department of English in New Brunswick. “We want students to have a place where they can learn to express themselves in the most powerful media of the 21st century.”

There is one thing that scholars across all academic disciplines have in common: writing.

 From creative writing to expository writing, historical writing to scientific writing, faculty at Rutgers rely on the written word to advance new theories, report breakthroughs, and critique existing thought.
