Writers House, a high-tech laboratory of ideas, taps the internet generation to create new forms of writing

Like many of his peers, Rutgers University freshman Shawn Kennedy has an aversion to books. The last one he read for pleasure was a Stephen King novel, about four years ago.

But the 19-year-old from Phillipsburg feels at home at the university's new Writers House, a high-tech laboratory of sorts where most of the literature is online, blogging is required and teachers are as likely to reference a YouTube video as a Shakespeare quote.

High school students spend summers on campus as part of revamped program.

Lisa Ankrah is only 15 years old, but she’s got her wits about her. The bookish tenth grader enjoyed the contentious conversations in the weekly symposia, part of this year’s Upward Bound program.

“It’s controversial as opposed to high school where everything is hush-hush,” said Ankrah, a student at Perth Amboy High School. “The attitude is more like, ‘We’re not gonna baby you.’”

Beyond paper, Writers House explores digital side of literary and creative work

Despite its emphasis on multimedia, image, video, and sound, Writers House was purposely named.

"We really wanted to emphasize that Writers House is about a level of sophistication, complexity, and commitment to both clear and elegant expression regardless of the media you are working in," said Richard Miller, chair of the Department of English in New Brunswick. “We want students to have a place where they can learn to express themselves in the most powerful media of the 21st century.”
