Description

Adrienne Rich is a leading American poet who has published nineteen volumes of poetry and four books of essays to extensive critical acclaim. Since Rich received the Yale Younger Poets Prize in 1951 from W.H. Auden, she has become a staple in many feminist anthologies and on many critics’ lists. The bones of Rich’s writing comes, as Mark Doty said, from “her restless empathy for those not in positions of power.” Rich, who is a former Professor of English at Douglass College, has been the recipient of the many prestigious writing awards, including the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, a MacArthur “genius” grant, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lannan Foundation, the National Institute of Arts and Letters Award, and the National Book Award for Poetry. Her most recent collection of essays entitled, A Human Eye: Essays on Art in Society, was published in 2009.
